The European Union is increasingly caught in international crossfire. The COVID-19 pandemic intensifies global economic competition, in particular the hostile rivalry between the United States of America and China. In this conflict, neutrality is no longer an option for Brussels because it shares the partnership of values of the Western world with Washington. Furthermore, numerous EU member states, as well as the United States, are members of the North Atlantic Pact.
